We provide a number of options for artists wishing to display their work at the Keys to Creativity Community Gallery: * All renting and commission-only artists must be members of Keys to Creativity first. See the Membership page. * All artwork must be juried (jury committee meets the first Thursday night of each month or by appointment). ContactKeys to Creativity for more information.
"Renting" Artist Option 1
Artists will be charged $1.00 per square foot for the display space they use. The gallery walls contain divisions which easily separate one area from the other. A full 8’ x 8’ section would rent for $64 per month, a 4’ x 8’ (half section) is $32 for the month. In addition, we will take a 20% commission off sales, leaving the artist an 80% profit on the sale of their artwork.
Artists will be expected to volunteer 16 hours per month staffing the gallery, or to find a substitute to work their hours for them. Anyone working more than 16 hours per month in staffing or after-hours time spent on jury panels, committee meetings or helping refresh gallery displays, etc., will decrease their monthly rent by $1.00 for each additional hour worked; i.e. if you work 12 hours a week, the additional 8 hours will decrease your space rent by $8.00. If you do that each week, you would decrease your rent by $32.00 per month, making the rent for an 8’ x 8’ space $32.00 instead of $64.00. This option also allows you to have someone else work hours on your behalf if you would like to make such an arrangement.
"Renting" Artist Option 2
If you are unable to work, or to find someone willing to work your shifts for you, the basic rental rates will be $1.25 per square foot, which comes out to $80.00 per month for an 8’ x 8’ section or $40.00 per month for a 4” x 8’ section (smaller spaces will be assessed on an individual basis).
Commission rate remains 20%
“Commission Only” Artist Option 3
Artists who are not interested in renting wall space or have only floor, shelf or table-displayed art for sale will be considered a “Commission Only” artist.
There is no rent or volunteer requirement for this option.
The gallery will take a 40% commission on their sold art.
Artist Responsibilities Artists are responsible for logging the hours they work in our “Volunteer Log” located at the front desk. At the end of each month the hours recorded by the artist or their surrogate are tabulated and emailed or otherwise distributed to the artist by management. The amount of rent owed for the following month will then be based on the volunteer hours the artist has reported. Unless special arrangements are made, rent is due by the 10th of each month. Rent is considered late 30 days after it is due and the artist will be subject to an additional $15 late charge. Anything after 60 days late is considered a breach of contract and art is subject to removal until payment is made. Artwork can be held by KTC until due payment is made, and a new contract may be required at the discretion of the KTC management. The reinstated artist will be asked to pay two months in advance. NOTE: The gallery manager may move pieces within a section, or rearrange the sections themselves to best suit all involved at the discretion of the gallery’s needs, but will maintain the same square footage that each renting artist is paying for. It is requested that artists have some pieces that they can “refresh” their space with at least every 4 to 6 weeks. The general intent is to keep the entire gallery space looking “new” for returning customers. As far as artwork is concerned, we welcome a diverse inventory that appeals to a broad spectrum of tastes, but we ask for no reproductions of licensed or trademarked images without legal permission, no gratuitously violent imagery, or anything that could be considered degrading to basic human dignity within commonly held social standards. Management reserves the right to make these determinations. While every effort will be made to protect your work, we cannot guarantee its safety 100%. Keys to Creativity will not be held liable for any damages or theft that may occur while your work is in our possession, in any venue in which it is displayed. Its placement with us is at your own risk.
Our Promises To Our Artists
The Lansing Mall location itself is one of the greatest perks we have to offer, with extended hours, free parking and a traffic volume that exceeds any other gallery in the area. Keys to Creativity will also be hosting a number of special performing arts events and special art displays throughout the year to further increase customer traffic at the mall and our gallery.
We strive to advance all our artists and are always looking for opportunities to exhibit or sell their work outside the KTC gallery space in various locations such as in local businesses and neighborhood organizations. To present your work in this way, contact the KTC management for an agreement form and more information. We will also contact you each time a new prospect presents itself.
We will promote your artwork and any classes you may be teaching on our Facebook page, website and other social media, and through flyers, email campaigns and radio spots. We are also happy to promote any shows or special exhibits you are participating in. As we develop our website, we will create profile pages for each artist and include links to your own website, should you have one.
Our Keys Member artists will have a reduced rate of entry to any “Artist Call Outs” for special exhibits and have tables at our cost for any art shows Keys to Creativity may sponsor.
Our classroom space will be available to our artists for their own personal work, or as a meeting space, free of charge during any open hours in which a class or other event is not scheduled.
You will always have a voice here; we welcome your thoughts, ideas, comments and suggestions as we constantly strive to improve our art center for the betterment of everyone!
You will have the opportunity to work with warm, nurturing and supportive people who share your love of creativity and commitment to furthering access to the arts for everyone in our community!
We think our “group” is the greatest, and we are enormously grateful to all of you for your support and enthusiasm in creating this special place for ourselves, each other, and our community. We hope our relationship with all of you lasts a very long time!
Click the button below to pay the rent: Rental fee varies based on the space size and the hours of volunteer time to the gallery. For volunteers, adjusted prices and rent payment needs to be done in the store. For non-volunteering artists a $.50 charge is placed on and included to every $10 interval package as this is the cost of the on-line process. We are doing our best to keep our costs down while offering you the easiest payment options. This means that your total costs for a $20 rental space is $21, a $32 rental space is $33.50, a $40 rental space is $42, a $64 rental space is $67, and an $80 space is $84. Otherwise checks can always be mailed in to Keys to Creativity, 5746 W. Saginaw Hwy, Lansing, MI 48917, or payments can be done in the store.
