Toward the end of 2014, Larry Grudt learned of projects in other places around the country where artist-painted pianos were put out into the community for the public to play and enjoy. He thought this would be a great thing to bring to the greater Lansing area, and he set about making it happen. Call-outs for donated pianos and artists to paint them went out in early 2015 and with the incredible generosity of Two Men and a Truck, who picked them all up for us and delivered them to their destinations.
At the end of May, 2015, 14 uniquely designed and painted pianos were placed throughout Lansing and East Lansing, including a baby grand piano at the Lansing Mall. The Lansing Mall offered a space for some of the artists to paint their pianos, and the public interest in watching this project unfold led to the mall management's invitation to Larry and Beth Grudt to open a community art center there at the mall in late summer 2015.
KEYSTOCREATIVITY officially opened in October 2015 with some of our piano artists as our initial group of gallery artists. The pianos returned to Lansing and East Lansing in the summer of 2016. We hope to expand this project to other Michigan communities in the future.
Sorry for our mess, we are experiencing difficulties.
