Our featured artist at the Keys to Creativity Event Gallery for the month of June 2017 is Dennis Preston, known throughout mid-Michigan for his amazing caricatures and pen and ink work, and his many years of teaching at Lansing Community College. But what many people do not know is that in the 1960s and 70s, Dennis Preston created some of the most iconic, psychedelic rock concert posters ever seen, commissioned by top bands such as Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Grand Funk Railroad, and many more. A collection of his original rock concert art not only forms the basis of this incredible display, but served as the inspiration for Keys to Creativity to mount our own local rock festival, “Lansing’s Summer of Love”, in tribute to the 50th anniversary of 1967’s Summer of Love.
That memorable summer began with the first major outdoor rock concert, The Monterey International Pop Festival, soon attracting an influx of hippies, flower children and anti-war protestors to the Haight-Ashbury District of San Francisco. Along the way, 1967 also saw the emergence of British fashion model Twiggy and the micro mini-skirts and “mod” fashions from Carnaby Street in London, as well as the release of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” by the Beatles, which changed rock music forever! Later that year saw the first issue of Rolling Stone magazine, and the very first Super Bowl—making 1967 a year truly worthy of our remembrance!
The Dennis Preston 60s and 70s Rock Poster Art Exhibit will launch on Friday, June 2nd with an opening reception from 7:00 – 9:00 PM, free to the public, with wine and hors d’oeuvres served for those 21 and over. Don’t miss the opportunity to check out this incredible exhibition and to participate in the various Lansing's Summer of Love concerts, movies and other activities throughout Lansing in June and July.
